FREMONT: POP GOOLD'S OLD HOUSE WILL BE SAVED, RELOCATED

The early 20th century former home of longtime Fremont educator J. Vernon "Pop" Goold will be spared from the wrecking ball and relocated just a few hundred feet away.

A local family that owns a vacant lot in Fremont's Centerville district has finalized a deal with developer Nuvera Homes to buy the historical home for $1 and move it onto their property in the coming weeks.

The deal puts an end to roughly a year of uncertainty over the fate of the structure.

The former Goold home is among 10 houses and a commercial building that had to be cleared so Nuvera can build 52 condominiums along a portion of Peralta Boulevard and Parish Avenue for a project known as Centerville Junction.

"It's really unbelievable and exciting," said the woman whose family is taking over the home; she asked that her name not be used. Her grandmother used to own a home on the plot, which was demolished because of safety issues in the 1990s. Her family has since maintained the plot at 3365 Peralta Blvd.

Ever since the development was approved by the Fremont City Council last September, some residents argued for honoring the legacy of Goold - a former principal and superintendent of the original Washington Union High School District - by preserving his old home.

Goold was a teacher at the school beginning in 1924, principal for 12 years beginning in 1942, then superintendent the following five years until he retired. He was also an active community member and is credited with helping to expand schools in the area, including James Logan High in Union City.

His home was deemed ineligible for historic preservation after an evaluation performed for the city determined an addition built in 2003 "resulted in a loss of integrity of design," materials and workmanship reflective of the era in which it was constructed.

The woman taking the home onto her property said she attended Washington High School, as did her siblings, children and other family members, so the connection to Goold was special.

"It really means a lot," she said. "I hate to see old Fremont go, and we're seeing more and more of that. The cute little houses like these, they're just not gonna be anymore."

Jeff Lawrence, vice president of Nuvera Homes, told The Argus this week the process needed to get that done has been "a lot more involved than I might have envisioned, but it'll be worth doing when we get it moved.

"I'll be happy when it's there," he said, adding that his company is just waiting for a couple of permits from Caltrans to move the house along Peralta, which is part of State Highway 84.

The home has been lifted onto a trailer and is awaiting relocation, which Lawrence said likely could occur within a couple of weeks.

"I really can't believe it," the woman taking over the home said. "It's kind of a way of keeping that going, the history of Fremont."

After nearly a decade of delays, 27 Drakes Cove Court is ready. Originally part of a subdivision of 23 homes near the shore of Richardson Bay, the Larkspur home's development was tabled when the recession obliterated California's housing and construction markets.

But the dream never died, largely because of the site’s scenic vistas of hillsides, shorelines and aquatic life.

"There were so many capital improvements to be done because it’s such a challenging site,"said Jeff Lawrence, vice president of development and operations of Nuvera Homes, the company behind 27 Drakes Court. "Someone would only go through all that if there were great views to be had."

The end result is a custom five-bedroom, four-bathroom home with an open floor plan, eat-in kitchen and a rear tile deck spanning the length of the residence. San Francisco Bay and Mount. The floor plan and design remain largely unchanged from the original architect’s designs, Lawrence said, and the groundwork set by the original development firm helped Nuvera Homes jump-start the project as the economy improved.

"There are times where a builder has to redo everything," Lawrence said. "This wasn't like that. They had already gotten through the approval process and they were great designs from the start."

Boring into the bedrock to lay the foundation was an arduous task, Lawrence said, but future owners will benefit greatly from the work.

"It's built on a rock-solid base. You'll never have to worry about the dirt moving," he said.

Past a solid-core cherry door, the two-story home opens to a spacious foyer before yielding to a great room with southern views. Two dishwashers, a six-burner range and a 75-bottle wine cooler make the kitchen an ideal space for cooking for large crowds, while the center island and Shaker cabinetry give guests a stylish place to gather around.

Also located on the main level is a master suite with a deck, a walk-in closet and a fireplace. A Hydro System tub, glass shower and dual marble vanities complete the spa-quality master bathroom.

"Typically in Marin you see reverse floor plans or homes with lots of stairs; having the master suite and a guest bedroom on the main level is rare," Lawrence said.

Of course, being constructed in Marin County means the luxury home needs to be energy efficient.

Dual-paned windows and concrete roof tiles help insulate the home all year long, while the drought-tolerant garden is partially irrigated by rainfall and storm water runoff.

"The project was already something amazing when it was stopped," Lawrence said. "And it's awesome now that it is back on."
